Sewing 101

Create a private working space, out of the way, where you don't have to repeatedly put things away and take them out again. The kitchen table is not for sewing, and although it is compatible for pattern cutout, try the large conference-size tables at the public library when space becomes an issue.

Sewing requires patience. Approach it like an algebra problem: never skip a step, regardless of how unimportant it might seem at the time. Shortcuts and working out of sequence cause errors, most of which are correctable, but many leave telltale signs announcing to all, "Lookie what I made!" You begin as a student, painstakingly struggling to color within the lines of perfection. When you emerge the teacher, you may take liberties with shortcuts and reinventing the wheel.

Scout the market and believe in your abilities. Great Great Grandma mastered a sewing machine with one stitch and no foot pedal, a bolt of commonplace cotton/muslin fabric and black or white thread. Nourish your creativity and refuse to be stifled by conservatism. Share ideas and results, both sensational and horrific. Brainstorming beckons new ideas and revisions of those that ran amuck.

Baby Steps

Make friends with your sewing machine. Easily done. This friend comes with a manual and a glossary that simplifies terms and tasks.

Jumpstart your confidence. Boxer shorts, drawstring bags and pillows are easy practice projects. Do not confuse easy with small; baby or doll clothing with tiny pattern pieces will soon having you frustrated and angry with your new friend.

Must-haves

Inexpensive gadgets simplify and save time:

Be A Material Girl

All fabrics and threads are not created equally. Experiment on remnants. Explore the Internet (a powerful educational tool) for advice. Textures and mixed media are in. Play around and learn from your victories and defeats.

Thread is the strength that holds it all together, yet compares to the artistic brush stroke. Rayon has a high sheen and performs well. Polyester is economical, resists fading and shrinking and interchanges with rayon. Cotton performs well and has a soft sheen; silk is strong with brilliant colors.

Trouble Shooting

Be sensitive to the needs of your sewing machine:

The unity of machine and man must be forgiving. Mistakes happen. Shrugging responsibility to correct or prevent these mistakes drives a wedge in that friendship. Relax, take control, and sewing will be a rewarding experience.
